New sounds of jazz

This show features the modern sounds of jazz music. These musicians are grounded in the tradition of be-bop and jazz, but have fused their sound with electronics, sampling and funky rhythms. They have pushed the envelope beyond traditional jazz forms as the great ones like Miles and Trane have in the past. This is the future of the Jazz idiom.

The Hartford-NYC Connection

Many of our local Jazz artists have made the leap to playing in prestigious New York City venues. Some have moved there in hopes of pursuing the dream of making a steady living, and playing jazz with the greats. This show is all about that Hartford area connection to the City. We are indeed lucky to be only a couple hours train ride and cab fare to places like the Village Vanguard, Jazz Standard, Blue Note Cafe and more. There are also many jazz mentors to give these kids their big break in the jazz scene. Most importantly, we have the cats with the chops that can play and know how to swing with the best of them.

What I've been listening to

Just some music I've been listening to. Another couple of days hitting the jazz clubs in NYC this week. Got to see some great acts such as Steve Turre, EJ Strickland and others. Locally caught a great jazz jam led by Steve Davis. The music just keeps coming. If you are in the area, don't forget Dave Holland's band coming to UCONN's Jorgensen Auditorium this Thursday. We've got them all represented here.

Just play some jazz

Radiothon has ended, so we'll go back to just playing jazz. This week was the final push for donations to WHUS, and with the support of our podcast listeners, this show met its fundraising goals. I've edited out most of the pleas for donations, so there are some abrupt edits in my mic breaks. As for the music, there is a wide variety of jazz styles represented here. A couple of albums of note are Frain/Dunlop and a new release from Bobby Watson. I really dig both of these CD's and you will be hearing more from them in the coming weeks.

DJQ Live from Studio A

The Rob DeSesa Quintet performed live at WHUS Studio A this Saturday morning, and we recorded it live for this podcast. These wonderful dedicated musicians played great compositions by the likes of Coltrane, Rollins, Shorter and more. We were fortunate to have the WHUS engineer on-hand, so the audio quality is fantastic, and I ripped it at a much higher bit-rate than usual. I hope you enjoy this special live performance by these talented artists. More info about these artists at Simmer Music.

DeSesa Jazz Quintet is:

Mike Caruk - Trumpet, Rob DeSesa - Drums, Mark Dunlap - Bass, Brad Rickert - Piano, Dia Silverstien - Sax, Flute

CT Jazz scene

The Hartford area jazz scene has become a beautiful thing to behold. Last night's event at Firehouse 12 in New Haven with the Dezron Douglas Quintet is a testament to that fact. These great artists that we have been following for years, have grown from kids learning the craft of jazz music to accomplished performers, leaders and mentors to a new crop of jazz students. This show celebrates the Hartford area jazz scene. Dig it, some day these guys will be jazz legends like their mentor Jackie McLean.

We took this clip of last nights performance of the Dezron Douglas Quintet featuring, Dez leading it on bass, Curtis Torian drums, Josh Evans trumpet, Lummie Spann alto, Dave Bryant piano.

NYC Jaunt

Another trip to NYC, another great couple of days hitting the jazz clubs and hearing great new and established jazz artists. Our first night was spent at one of our favorite West Village venues, 55Bar to see bassist Janek Gwizdala with his septet, including the great Randy Brecker. The following night we went to the Jazz Standard to catch Jeff Tain Watts and Ebonix featuring the great young sax player Marcus Strickland. We'll hear from these fantastic musicians, and others that appeared at these shows, and some more.

Gritty Guitar... and more

We start tonight's show with some unique guitar tracks from some relatively new artists on the scene. We saw Kurt Rosenwinkel live last weekend, and it inspired this show. Following Kurt are some fine new guitarists on the scene such as Mikkel Ploug, and Alex Machacek. We round out the show with a couple of talented pianists from New England, Miro Sprague and Christopher Bakriges. Also take note of the final track in tonight's podcast. A couple of months ago, I met with the Matre' De at the Jazz Standard. Turns out this cat is a fine jazz bassist and composer named Rob Duguay.

Rest of Show

Once again, our radio broadcast has been preempted for sports programing. Not to worry, the weekly podcast remains uninterrupted! This weeks show is the final hour of last weeks program. We start off with a great track from Steps Ahead and a kickin' sax solo by Michael Brecker. Following that is Freddie Hubbard live playing one of my favorite Train compositions. Than we have Zawinul with the WDR Big Band, reminiscent of Weather Report... and more.

Hot tunes for cold nights

Nothing better to warm you up on a cold winter's night than some hot jazz tunes. That is what we have for you tonight. Starting with some great Trombone work from Steve Davis and Curtis Fuller. Rahsaan Roland Kirk, kicks it with some crazed tenor sax, and Chris Potter shows off his chops with new jazz music. Check out some cool jazz by local artist Rob DeSesa Quartet, who will be performing right here next Saturday Morning on WHUS FM (more on that later).
